Master Goldsmith in the Ölmühle Freiburg

The Ölmühle in Freiburg

... is situated in one of the most beautiful corners of the old inner ctiy of Freiburg. The canal flows right beside and you find it at the End of Gerberau or coming down from Schwabentor. Cross the tiny romantic bridge and move to the left to find the entrance.

Ölmühle translates as oil-mill. This name refers to the beginning of the 20th century when the building served for some years to get oil out of nuts and olives which were imported from Italy and supplied the needs of Freiburg cathedral.

The building dates to the mid of 15th century. It served to wash animal skins at the canal. The deeper steps which helped to access the waterline are still visible although closed now.
